Hastings Castle Tour

A large ditch cut into the sandstone

Conqueror's Ditch

his obstacle to attack was quickly hewn out of the sandrock by manual labourers as soon as the Normans arrived on September 28 1066. The earth was thrown up on both sides of the ditch. Although the ditch has filled up with foliage and rocks over the years, it's not hard to see what a mighty barrier it would have presented to an attacking force in the Middle Ages. The Castle was virtually impregnable because the escarpment of the rock (to the right of this picture) on which it stood is practically perpendicular.
